a trip to the store

felching for sustenance

inside the grocery store supermarket
there are folks gathering food items
  tomatoes arranged feng shui
    lettuce

a man in genuflection views canned peas
a woman stares straight through a box of cereal

oftentimes, i need the reminder that things are always more than they seem,
that as of yet reality remains unfinished-
in harmony with the essence of ancient things,
in dissonance with the ideal.

aisle thirteen, dairy.
remember the times when a gallon cost a quarter?
the good old times when the band was still together
the era before political cynicism when journalists had integrity
the golden ages of literature

were they really that good or are you expressing an inadequacy in facing up to the moment?
do you feel guilty?
(i do)

that's backwards thinking.

grab milk
head towards the self-checkout lane
press on-screen buttons

now that's forward-thinking.
